Crystals were said to have their first recorded use among ancient Sumerians who used crystal properties in elixirs. Ancient Egyptians also used crystals in their jewelry and ornaments, but given their connection to the spirit world, some also equate their use of crystal décor with spirituality. Later in crystals they were found in certain Chinese medicines about 5000 years ago.
These days, crystals have made a come-back in spirituality, healing, and meditative practices.
My favorite way to work with crystals is through crystal grids, a layout of one or more types of crystals that align with your intentions.
Like candles, crystal can be used by color according the chakra system (Red (starting at the root chakra), Orange (Lower abdomen), Yellow (Solar Plexus), Green (Heart), Blue (Throat), Indigo (Third Eye), and Violet (Crown).
Other crystals have their own properties and sometimes correlate with chakras or other issues, for example black tourmaline and other black colored crystals can be associated with grounding and the root chakra.
Each crystal has its own energy that it emits based on its properties or color – high vibrations are believed by some to mitigate illnesses (low frequency illness can’t live in a high frequency environment) and to manifest things that are in line with high vibrations like abundance and love.
Here are some common crystals for different intentions and issues:
Selenite – a clear crystal used for cleansing and aligning all chakras
Rose quartz – a pink crystal with an association to the heart chakra and love/self-love
Turquoise – inner calm, stabilizing mood, prevention of panic attacks
Malachite – green crystal for heart chakra and money manifesting
Obsidian – a black crystal for grounding and bringing out truth
Black Tourmaline – a black crystal for grounding and dispelling energy
Orange citrine – attacks love and happiness, cleanses and energizes
Many of these crystals have multiple uses but this is a quick cheat sheet for commonly used crystals.
When starting your crystal grid there are several steps you’ll want to follow:
- Set an intention – be clear with what you’re asking of the universe and of yourself, write it down on a piece of paper or make it specific in your mind
- Set the space – find a space in your home or workspace that is clear of other energy and free of clutter and where the grid can stay at your discretion; clean the space with alcohol and smudge it with palo santo to remove and lingering energies
- Choose crystals that align with your intention – crystals can be found in many stores these days and online, I personally like to shop locally and to find crystals that are ethically or even locally sourced. Crystals from online are sometimes just colored glass or low quality, however at the end of the day it doesn’t matter because the colors have their own energy and still will align with your goals.
- Choose a grid pattern – common grid patterns to follow are sacred geometry, the infinity symbol, madalas, etc. You can find free printable crystal grids here.
- Arrange the crystals on the lines in an alternating pattern, you don’t have to cover the lines and can just use the general shape as a model. You can also set up your own arrangement without a grid.
- Do a meditation with your grid being specific about your goals
*optional you can also add flowers, a glass of water, or other items to complement the grid or items like a bowl of Himalayan pink salt near the grid to absorb any negative energy from interfering
Crystal grids are a great way to focus your manifesting and provide aesthetic and energetic peace to your home.
