Who’s working them roots? Revealing your attacker by J. Allen Cross

We live in a time where two things reign supreme, instant gratification and instant access to information. Pair that with the recent trend of witchcraft and you have a recipe for disaster. Having practiced all my life, I’ve noticed a dramatic uptick in the popularity of Witchcraft in the last three years and with it, a shocking rise in hex culture. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to a justified, well deserved hex. However, what I’m seeing from a lot of new witches is anything but “justified”. Though, I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, one of the first lessons the internet taught us about humanity is that people feel much more comfortable being nasty to each other when they can hide behind a screen. Witchcraft, when practiced on a mass scale, is proving to be no different. These same types have found out that with a google search they can skip any foundational knowledge of the craft and jump straight to cursing anyone that inconveniences them, or has something they want. This epidemic stretches to long practiced witches as well, but with less prevalence.

So, what can be done? I’ve found the best defense against this culture is to remind them that they are not as anonymous as they think they are. The good thing about people jumping straight into hexing without any foundational knowledge or skills, is that they are often sloppy in their work. Even those who have been practicing for a while don’t realize that their hexes leave a fingerprint that can be read like an IP Address. So, let’s talk about identifying your hexer.

First, we should take a look around at “the usual suspects”. Start by going through the people who have had access to your things or your home in the past month or so. Especially your bedroom, laundry room, or your bathroom. Who would have been able to get some of your hair, nail clippings, an article of clothing, etc? Once you have that list, ask yourself, do any of them have a motive to hex you? If yes, we can put them at the top of our list of possible suspects. Take in to account any rivals you have at work or in your personal/romantic relationships as well. These are the most common culprits. Also, are you missing anything such as a toothbrush or a lipstick? Where were those things las? Your gym bag? Or maybe your desk at work? This will give us clues as to how the hexer knows you (from the gym, or work etc.). I find in most cases, people know their attacker. However, in this age of social media, our photos are all over the internet and our information is easily accessed by anyone. This greatly broadens the pool of suspects and means we must move on to step two.

The second step, is to get a reading. This is important because a good reading can often identify exactly who has laid the curse. If your reader is good, or the culprit was sloppy, the reading can sometimes reveal the exact name. If they can’t give a name, they can at least narrow the field by providing a clear description. For instance, a reading may reveal how you know them, what their gender expression is, what their personality is like, and any other details surrounding the situation that will often point to the exact culprit. The reading will also show what was done to you, and why. Now, it’s important that when you get a reading, you get it from a reader that you trust and have worked with before. If you don’t already have a reader, get a referral from a trusted friend. This is a very vulnerable time to have a reading and scammers will take full advantage of it. If you are a reader yourself you can absolutely do your own reading for this. However, if you aren’t very comfortable with your chosen divination method, or sense that the work is causing paranoia or other misdirected anxieties, it’s best to have someone outside the situation look into it for you. Their fresh perspective can make a huge difference.

Now, if you are doing your own reading (or are a reader preparing to do this work for others) here are the steps to take when identifying the attacker. I prefer to use tarot, so I’ll be using that as an example, but feel free to use any method you prefer. First, cleanse your space and your cards to remove any interfering energies or entities that may want to cloud the information. Many workers have spirits assisting them, and they may be trying to keep you blind to their work, so this step is important. Once that’s done, load a yellow or white candle with Luke 8:17 “For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither anything hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.” Carve your intention into the candle, dress it with clarity or revealing oil, and say a prayer. If you so choose you may burn a special incense containing herbs like Mugwort that assist divination, Rosemary that helps provide clarity, or St. John’s Wort which helps uncover uncouth spell casters. Now you’re all set to proceed with your reading in your usual preferred fashion.

If you’ve narrowed it down to a good description of the person, but it matches several possible suspects, we can narrow it down even further by dowsing. Say three people match the description and all have a motive, I deal three tarot cards assigning each of them a suspect’s identity. I also deal an extra one for “unknown person(s)”. You then take a clean pendulum over each card asking if they are the culprit. It may reveal one or multiple folks who are working together or independently. If it picks up a known rival, and an unknown person, consider they may have hired an unknown worker to do the actual casting for them. All of which can be divined using the pendulum and further card pulls.

Another helpful way to receive information about who is working on you is to pay attention to your dreams. Often our guides and ancestors will try to warn us this way. Look for signs such as someone coming after you, or trying to get into your home. Pay attention to who they are if you recognize them, or what they may represent if you don’t. If you have a dream that seems important, but doesn’t make sense, you can look up the symbols in a dream dictionary or online to see if they spell out a message. Sometimes however, it can be quite direct. I’ve been shown the exact person, and even on one occasion was given their Instagram handle this way. You just have to pay attention.

When it comes to this work, there are many things to consider. First, a lot of times when people send out nasty energy, it’s done unintentionally. Even if it’s throwing a wrench in your business, that doesn’t mean that they’ve taken deliberate action to harm you. This is common with crossed conditions associated with the Evil Eye and relationship difficulty. Your man’s ex may indeed be the source of the negativity, but that doesn’t always mean she has you in a jar. She may just be hating really hard. You should still take action to quell the situation, but whether their attack was intentional or not should be considered when planning your counter work.

When it comes to planning a counter attack, we need to be smart. Don’t forget that cleansing and protection work should be your first priority, even before revenge. When it comes to a counter move, it’s usually best to bind and/or banish, instead of counter cursing. Counter cursing tends to perpetuate witch wars, but if your situation calls for it, you do what you need to do. It’s also completely acceptable not to retaliate as long as you’ve taken the proper steps to make sure you’re protected from further attack. Ultimately, once they have been identified, the next steps are up to you. Do as ye will.
